What is Cholera?

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. There are an estimated 1.3–4.0 million cases of cholera and between 21,000 and 143,000 deaths due to cholera worldwide every year.

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause no symptoms.

The symptoms can include:
  • Severe acute watery diarrhoea. It takes between 12 hours and 5 days for a person to show symptoms after ingesting contaminated food or water (2).
  • Occasional vomiting
  • Rapid loss of lfuids can lead to dehydration, shock
  • In severe cases when not treated can lead to death
To minimise your risk
  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly, especially after using the toilet and before preparing food or eating
  • Only drink tap water that’s been boiled or bottled water
  • Brush your teeth using bottled or boiled water
  • Do not eat uncooked fruit and vegetables (including salads) that you have not washed with bottled or boiled water and prepared yourself
  • Do not eat ice cream or have ice in your drinks
