What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver. The virus is spread through the faecal-oral route via contaminated food & water or close physical contact with an infected person, including having sex and sharing needles to take drugs.

Symptoms usually occur 2-4 weeks after being exposed.

The symptoms can include:
  • Fever
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Loss of appetite, diarrhoea
  • Nausea, discomfort in the abdomen
  •  Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
  • Dark-coloured urine

In rare cases, hepatitis can cause life-threatening complications such as liver problems, especially for the elderly.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before preparing and eating food
  • Drink bottled water
  • Avoiding eating shellfish and uncooked fruit and vegetables
  • Using a condom when having sex
