What is Meningococcal b?

Meningococcal bacteria are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and can lead to meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia). There are five main groups. Meningococcal group B (MenB) is the most common, accounting for over 54% of reported cases of meningococcal meningitis.

The symptoms can include:

Most people who get polio do not have symptoms.
Some people get mild, flu-like symptoms, such as:

  • A headache
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Vomiting
  • A stiff neck
  • A rash may also appear that can develop into a purple, bruise-like rash that does not fade under pressure 
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • A high temperature
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Drowsiness or difficulty waking up
To minimise your risk
  • Avoid close personal contact (such as kissing), or living in dormitories or other shared environments with people who have symptoms of meningitis.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as eating and drinking utensils
