  • If you’re pregnant, could be pregnant, or you’re trying to get pregnant, do not use this service
  • If you’ve given birth within the last six weeks, do not use this service
  • If you’re breastfeeding there may be a temporary reduction in your milk if you take these period delay tablets
  • You should not take period delay tablets if you’re already using the hormonal contraception eg pill, patch or implant
  • It is also not suitable for women at higher risk of blood clots

Norethisterone is a synthetic hormone that mimics the effects of a natural hormone called progesterone. Norethisterone works by tricking the body into thinking that it has already ovulated (released an egg) and that a pregnancy has potentially occurred. This tricks the body into maintaining a thickened uterine lining, preventing the menstrual period from happening.

Norethisterone when taken for period delay may cause side effects including spotting, changes in your menstrual cycle breast tenderness, feeling sick, headache or changes in mood.

Take one 5mg tablet three times a day, starting three days before your expected period
